Paths to Faithful Caregiving
Caring for an older adult can be stressful in many ways. When caregivers don't have enough help and support, stress can take a toll on their emotional, financial and physical health.
Paths to Faithful Caregiving is an AgeOptions faith-based training program for caregivers. It was developed as part of Caring Together, Living Better, AgeOptions' successful faith-based and community caregiver support program created in 2009.
Paths to Faithful Caregiving teaches family caregivers how to:
- Manage stress and difficult emotions
- Communicate more effectively
- Create balance in life
- Locate helpful resources
- Find caregiving strength through their own unique spiritual practices
Caregivers who participate in the program will acquire the tools they need to better cope with caregiving challenges, making it possible for them to continue providing quality care and delay costly nursing home placement for their loved one.
Paths to Faithful Caregiving has been tested in urban and suburban settings with a diverse range of caregivers from various faith backgrounds. Participants' level of confidence increased, enabling them to effectively manage caregiving.
I believe this is an awesome program and it will give caregivers support, hope and a better understanding of their caregiving journey.

An Award-Winning Program for Caregivers
Paths to Faithful Caregiving is a copyrighted adaptation of the University of Illinois Extension Caregiving Relationships curriculum. The adaptation includes spiritual exercises developed by CJE SeniorLife and others as part of Caring Together, Living Better. The program's faith component complements topics in caregiver trainings including positive thinking, effective communication and handling difficult situations such as loss and grief.
In 2014 the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging recognized Paths to Faithful Caregiving with its Aging Achievement Award given to programs that develop and implement cutting-edge approaches to supporting older adults, people with disabilities and those who care for them.
Thanks to a grant from Bader Philanthropies, we are now pilot testing a Spanish version of the program.
