One Away – Darlene’s Story

Darlene spends what seems like 36 hours a day caring for her husband Bill. This is not the retirement either of them had intended with him in the bed and her doing everything she can to make him comfortable and give him some quality of life. Older adults like Darlene and Bill are struggling every day to make ends meet.

Caregivers like Darlene receive benefits from proven national programs including: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and services under the Older Americans Act such as home delivered meals, transportation, and information and assistance. These programs are the reasons Darlene and her husband remain in the community. — The personal sacrifices they make to stay in their own home deserves much more support than is readily available.
