Empowering people to thrive as they age.

Library Program

Public libraries in suburban Cook County offer targeted programming to older adults in their communities, providing socialization and bridging the digital divide.

Program Mission

Since 2018, AgeOptions’ Library Program has connected suburban Cook County public libraries to the aging network, with a goal to enhance older adult programming, place a focus on social isolation and increase the community’s understanding of benefits and services available. Through the pandemic, AgeOptions expanded the library program and partnered with libraries to address the digital divide by establishing a targeted tech-lending program, with accompanying tech education and training.

What do our library partners provide?

Each of our partner libraries develops a unique and individualized plan to best serve older adults in their community, which may include:

  • Tech-lending
  • Tech-training, education, and assistance
  • Virtual programming
  • Take-home kits (including crafts and Wits Workout)
  • Hosting AgeOptions’ presentations and workshops

Stories of the Library

Des Plaines Public Library

“Two of our most dedicated library patrons attended all of our live programs prior to the pandemic and were so disappointed when we went to virtual programming and they could not attend. The iPads we purchased with AgeOptions CARES funds have given them the ability to attend our programs once again. We did a one-on-one technology session with them and they came back a couple of days later to say how grateful they were for the iPads and how much they are enjoying them.”

“Chair Yoga these past many months has been a vital part of my life. I look forward to it every week for the offering of live group energy doing the self-healing work of Yoga together. It soothes my mind and supports the flexibility and balance so needed, especially at this stage of life. I am grateful for it.”

Evergreen Park Public Library

“WITS Workout has been phenomenally popular at EPPL! I have had a steadily growing number of patrons joining the fun. I have had some new faces recently and when the hour is up everyone raves about the fun they have. We’re not so much focused on the specifics of the questions/trivia as much on the socialization aspect of the program. Everyone enjoys reminiscing during the recall activities and sharing stories from their youth. It’s always such a pleasure getting together with this group and I look forward to it every month!”

Chicago Ridge Public Library

“We had a new patron, ‘Maria,’ come to our beaded bracelet class. She instantly became friendly with the group she sat with. By the end of the class, longtime patron, ‘Joan’ invited Maria to other programs that we offer. Maria started seeing us for technology instruction and now she attends all kinds of programs!”
