Since 2018, AgeOptions’ Library Program has connected suburban Cook County public libraries to the aging network, with a goal to enhance older adult programming, place a focus on social isolation and increase the community’s understanding of benefits and services available. Through the pandemic, AgeOptions expanded the library program and partnered with libraries to address the digital divide by establishing a targeted tech-lending program, with accompanying tech-education and training.
Each of our partner libraries develops a unique and individualized plan to best serve older adults in their community, which may include:
Contact your local library for more information!
Des Plaines Public Library: “Two of our most dedicated library patrons attended all of our live programs prior to the pandemic and were so disappointed when we went to virtual programming and they could not attend. The iPads we purchased with AgeOptions CARES funds have given them the ability to attend our programs once again. We did a one-on-one technology session with them and they came back a couple of days later to say how grateful they were for the iPads and how much they are enjoying them.”
Morton Grove Public Library: (Thank you note received from older adult library patron) –
“Chair Yoga these past many months has been a vital part of my life. I look forward to it every week for the offering of live group energy doing the self-healing work of Yoga together. It soothes my mind and supports the flexibility and balance so needed, especially at this stage of life. I am grateful for it.”
Flossmoor Public Library: “We had [an older woman who] checked out our technology kits. They were able to FaceTime some family in Florida with help from their daughter and connect with them through the tablet and hotspot. They were very appreciative and amazed at “what you can do with technology these days!” She has already requested the kit again and is excited to see what else she can pick up.”
AgeOptions is proud to partner with local public libraries and celebrates libraries all year, especially during National Library Week (click here to learn more). We encourage everyone to visit their local library!
