A message from Diane Slezak, AgeOptions CEO and President (Oct 1, 2025):

The federal government has shut down after Congress was unable to pass a continuing resolution. This is the first government shutdown since 2018, which lasted just over a month. While the duration of this shutdown remains uncertain, our commitment to supporting older adults and their caregivers continues. It’s worth noting that during the 2018 shutdown, AgeOptions was able to continue making grant payments to our partners without disruption. We are hopeful this shutdown will be brief.

We are grateful for the robust funding and support we receive from the state of Illinois, which plays a key role in helping us maintain financial stability during periods like this. As we understand, many other essential federal programs, including those not administered by AgeOptions, such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid will continue to operate. However, due to furloughs within federal agencies, there may be delays in communication and scheduling for some services. 1-800-MEDICARE is still functional, and Medicare beneficiaries can still enroll at Medicare.gov. Stay tuned for more detailed information about other federal programs as it becomes available.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep you informed of any updates. In the meantime, we encourage you to visit the AgeOptions Advocacy Alerts website to stay informed and connect with your legislators about issues affecting older adults and caregivers. Please check back regularly for the latest information.
