What is the Legal Health Check-Up Tool?
Through collaboration with Pro Bono Net and Legal Aid Chicago, AgeOptions is pleased to present the Legal Health Check-Up Tool.
Older adults often encounter legal challenges that can significantly affect their well-being, including issues related to housing, healthcare, debt, and financial exploitation. These challenges are frequently unaddressed, especially among populations who may not have access to traditional legal services. Left unresolved, these problems can escalate and further impact an individual’s health and stability.
The Legal Health Check-Up Tool is a free, easy-to-use screening tool created to identify common legal risks faced by older adults. It covers a range of concerns such as foreclosure or eviction, abuse, healthcare access, scams, and financial exploitation. The tool is designed for both personal use and for professionals like social workers and healthcare providers who support older adults in community and clinical environments. It is available in two formats, Standard and Express, and can be completed online or a paper version that can be downloaded.
While users may complete the tool privately for their own insight, those who choose to submit it electronically will receive a follow-up from a Legal Aid Chicago attorney within 2–3 business days. The tool is currently in use in multiple states, including California, Idaho, and New York, and has proven effective in identifying legal problems early, helping prevent minor issues from developing into major crises and improving outcomes for older adults.
