Understanding the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period and General Enrollment Period

From January 1 – March 31, there are two enrollment periods available for Medicare beneficiaries, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period and the General Enrollment Period. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is for individuals currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and want to change or disenroll from their Medicare Advantage plan. The General Enrollment Period is for individuals to enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B when they have missed their Initial Enrollment Period and do not qualify for any other Special Enrollment Period.
